Under the Spotlight - Traffic Data Retention |
|
|
|
New EU directive has resulted in
the required retention of all data related to telecommunication service
providers’ traffic. The directive entered into force in May 2006 EU wide
harmonizes data retention obligations. Operators must implement the adequate
systems to comply with the requirements by the time member states enforce their
national laws.
As 2007 is well under way the
topic is becoming one of the hottest industry issues. There is an increasing
interest that shows operators, holdings and regulatory bodies have already
started vendor selection and cooperation to comply with the new regulations.
What are the hottest issues
regarding data retention?
- How to secure, store, manage and
destroy such a huge amount of data?
- Is there an added
value?
- Last but not least: who pays the
bill? The directive does not oblige member states to reimburse operators’
cost.
Now the spotlight is on traffic
data retention in Europe for all internet and/or telecom service providers.
